Childers® Chil-Brate™ CP-25

1 of 37 products in this brand
Childers® Chil-Brate™ CP-25 is a water-based, fire-retardant, fibrated, asphalt-emulsion, weather barrier coating designed for applications over insulations on above-ground installations that operate under moderate to high-temperature conditions. This coating is "breathing," allowing vapors under pressure to pass through it. Once dry, the film becomes tough and durable, offering protection against atmospheric corrosives, chemical liquids, and fumes.

Uses
  • It is primarily designed to protect insulation on equipment and structures in high temperature service, although it also provides protection against corrosion when applied directly over steel and concrete.
  • Typical insulations protected with this coating include calcium silicate, mineral and glass fibers, polyurethane and glass foams.
  • It is not recommended in ponded water areas or over polystyrene foam insulation.
Preparation and Application Information

Material Preparation:

  • Do not thin. Stir well, but do not use sticks or boards, which would splinter or otherwise contaminate the product.
  • Apply only to clean, dry, oil-free surfaces. Keep container closed when not in use. Cement coats must be dry. This product cannot be successfully applied by brush or spray.

Outdoor and Heavy-duty Service:

  • To prevent water infiltration, properly flash all penetrations. Prime dusty insulation or porous cements with an asphalt primer.
  • Chil-Brate™ CP-25 is designed to be applied by trowel. 1. Apply tack coat of Chil-Brate™ CP-25 at 7.5 gal. per 100 sq. ft. (3.1 l/m2 ) by trowel.
  • Embed CHIL-GLAS® #5 or #10 glass fiber reinforcing mesh into the wet tack coat. Smooth membrane to avoid wrinkles and overlap all seams at least 2 inches (51 mm).
  • Apply finish coat of Chil-Brate™ CP-25 at 7.5 gal. per 100 sq. ft. The second coat shall be applied immediately following the initial set of the first coat while it is still damp.
  • Total coverage shall be 15 gallons per 100 sq. ft.
  • This application shall provide a minimum dry film thickness of 120 mils (3 mm).
  • Chicken wire should not be used. Foot or mechanical traffic is not recommended for roof or tank top applications where high ambient temperatures may soften the mastic film.
  • Not recommended for indoor use. Outdoor horizontal surfaces must always drain completely. A pitch of at least 1⁄2” per foot (4 cm/m) is required.

Heavy Duty Applications - Up to 50% Greater Tensile Strength:

  • Apply as above, but making sure to use CHIL-GLAS® #5 glass fiber reinforcing mesh. Note that the membrane weave pattern will show through the dried mastic.

Trowel:

  • Apply evenly with a minimum of overworking of material. May be applied with a rubber glove on small radius pipes and vessels.

Clean Up:

  • Clean equipment with clean fresh water before mastic dries, followed by mineral spirits (flammable) or chlorinated solvent (nonflammable). Use mineral spirits or chlorinated solvent after mastic dries.
