Surface preparation
- All surfaces should be clean, dry, and free from frost, grease, and loose materials.
- When cleaning contaminated substrates, HS Butyl recommends using propan-2-ol (IPA) and allowing it to dry before applying the sealant strip.
- When applying the tape to porous or friable surfaces, it is recommended to treat the surface with a suitable primer, such as an exterior grade PVA, to seal and stabilise the surface.
Application
- To avoid creasing the foil, separate the foil and sealant from the backing paper as they are being unwound from the roll.
- Once applied, use a roller to ensure good adhesion to the substrate.
- Avoid joins in the flashing where possible.
- Any joints should overlap by at least 120mm, with the uppermost piece overlapping the lower strip so that water drains freely over the front surface of the flashing.
- When applying the tape to textured surfaces, such as pebble dash or rough brick, it is recommended to apply a bead of Silfix® U9 Low Modulus Silicone to the top edge of the foil to prevent water from penetrating behind the strip.
- Product Application
-
- For use as a flashing tape, for example, in conservatory construction.
- For over-sealing or repair of joints in gutters and downpipes.
- For sealing over T-bars in glazing and conservatories.
- For temporary remedial work, such as sealing leaking components.
